The 10½ days of Christmas!

23 Dec 2019

These 10½ practical BD tips were originally shared via Twitter and LinkedIn on the run up to 23rd December 2019.

On the 1st day of Christmas …

… Effective business development is just like Christmas, fail to prepare and prepare to fail!  Just like presents and Christmas dinner need to be organised, so does your BD calendar.

On the 2nd day of Christmas …

… Communication skills are as vital to BD as they are to Christmas.  Getting through a family gathering with people you don’t have much in common with requires good conversational skills, a bit of effort and plenty of enthusiasm.

On the 3rd day of Christmas …

… You can’t afford to run out of anything over Christmas as popping out for more is tricky.  It’s the same when you’re having meetings or pitching. You can’t pop out for more brochures, cards or slides. Make sure you’re fully stocked before you get there.

On the 4th day of Christmas …

… Just as you don’t maintain a friendship simply by sending a Christmas card once a year, you won’t win clients with one-off activities.  You need consistent contact evenly split across the year.

On the 5th day of Christmas …

… A happy Christmas is built on being able to show you care about the people you’re with.  Similarly effective BD isn’t about schmoozing. It’s about relationships.  Make sure you remember the little things like family, football team and holidays.

On the 6th day of Christmas …

… Never use social media when you’re full of Christmas cheer!  You wouldn’t do it at other times during the year so don’t do it at Christmas!

On the 7th day of Christmas …

… You won’t enjoy your Christmas if you just sit in the corner; you need to get involved even if that means forcing yourself through that game of charades!  BD’s the same, you get out what you put in so be prepared to participate not just turn up.

On the 8th day of Christmas …

… Design matters. You invest time to decorate the Christmas table so it looks as good as possible. You need to apply the same level of care to your brochures, website, social media presence and pitch docs.

On the 9th day of Christmas …

… Doing it all again on Boxing Day with other parts of the family can seem like a chore but it’s their time with you so you need to be on top form.  BD’s the same; you may have been out late at an event but make sure you appear fresh.

On the 10th day of Christmas …

… Do what you say you’ll do by when you said you would. Just like you have to get the turkey on the table at 3 if you’ve said you would, you need to do the follow up with clients/contacts you promised by when you promised.

On the 10½th day of Christmas …

… A good Christmas requires the cook to cook, the present-wrapper-upper to wrap and the sommelier to serve the wine! Effective BD’s the same; assign responsibilities based on your/your team’s strengths and interests.

All that remains is for us to wish you and yours a very  merry Christmas and a prosperous new year from everyone at Tenandahalf!
